Yesterday I visited Newlyn Gallery and The Exchange to see works by last year's Bloomberg artists, selected by (among others), an artist I have been researching, Marvin Gaye Chetwynd. The number of video works in the show was interesting to see, and particularly relevant as my practice develops towards performance, audiovisual work and installation. Subsequently, I took note of methods of installing works that felt particularly effective, such as Racheal Crowther's How 2 Dress, an image printed on to fabric being blown by a fan. Another noticeable point was that many works in the show embodied qualities of considered tackiness, apparent spontaneity, a purposeful crudeness of style that interests me greatly and lent the show a certain energy. A good example of this can be seen in Emily Motto's neon playdough sculptures and Charles Richardson's digitally manipulated film.
